Fundraiser Held by Strip's Chicken Helps Youth in Foster Care Buy a Car

Strip’s Chicken is a local, family owned, fast food restaurant in Olathe, Kansas that serves “wholesome and fresh food made from scratch.” According to local news station KSHB, word around the block is that this family oriented business is no stranger to lending a hand to a good cause, and recently Strip’s decided to shift their attention over to foster youth. Owner Todd Johnson shared that he always wanted to be able to give back to the community after he decided to open his business. In a statement he gave, he stated that his inspiration for helping kids in foster care came from helping the homeless in his community. "I realized that the homeless population is made up of about 50% of foster kids, and about half of foster kids will become homeless if they age out of the system within the first five years or so," Johnson said.

Johnson realized that transportation was a massive roadblock for foster youth who are aging out of the system, so he started to ask his customers to round their change to the next dollar to start saving up to buy foster youth cars as they exit the system. Partnering with YouThrive, “a new nonprofit organization that is focused on empowering and supporting our foster youth as they transition to adulthood,” Johnson was able to raise enough to match half the cost of fifteen cars over the course of five years.

Strip’s Chicken surely set the bar high with what they did for the foster kids in their community. The next time you or your business are trying to decide how to contribute to your community, consider helping your local foster youth!
